Museum Rietberg’s extensive collection contains over 2,000 Indian paintings which excite and fascinate visitors for their richness in detail. Museum Rietberg is one of the few institutions worldwide that has devoted decades to studying, interpreting and presenting these works in countless exhibitions and publications.
For the past 30 years, Museum Rietberg has presented Indian painting in the historical rooms of the Park-Villa Rieter. To commemorate this anniversary, the exhibition “A Love for Detail” presents the most important milestones of this international and collaborative scientific project and highlights the significant contributions which Museum Rietberg has made to this field of study.
Where were these paintings created and who were the artists who painted them? How did the albums and picture series come about? How were the works originally viewed? And what topics are researchers still exploring today?
The exhibition aims to answer these questions based on 60 of the most influential paintings from the museum’s own collection. Museum Rietberg invites you to discover the extravagance of detail in Indian painting and share it with others.
