This two-day conference will offer participants a chance to hear from more than 30 speakers about the material and visual culture of the last century of imperial China.
There will be four sessions each day, with the topics as follows.
Day 1 – Thursday 8 June
Painting and patronage
Calligraphy and seal carving
Vernacular painting and prints
Maps, money and magic lanterns
In the evening there will be a keynote lecture from Susan Naquin, Professor Emerita of History at Princeton University, 'Reconsidering China's 19th Century.'
Day 2 – Friday 9 June
Commerce and fashion
Textiles
Decorative arts
Craft technology and the environment
