Healing Practices: Stories from Himalayan Americans

  • THE RUBIN MUSEUM OF ART 150 WEST 17TH STREET NEW YORK, NY 10011 USA (map)

Today we’ve unveiled our newest exhibition, Healing Practices: Stories from Himalayan Americans, on our 6th floor. Featuring 26 objects from the Museum’s collection, the show explores diverse Tibetan Buddhist artworks and practices for health and well-being along with personal audio stories from individuals sharing their own healing journeys over the last two years.

Healing has been at the forefront of my mind lately: with the war in Ukraine, the continued violence against Asian American and Pacific Islander communities across the country, the mental health crisis in New York City, and the pandemic—it’s clear that we are hurting.

While we can’t promise a museum visit will heal, my hope is that this exhibition will be a source of comfort, support, and connection at a time when we need it most.

Connection is at the heart of this exhibition. Healing Practices was co-created with members of Himalayan American and Asian American communities, including New York tristate area and DC artists, medical professionals, spiritual leaders, activists, educators, and art therapists, and their diverse perspectives are fundamental to this show. I am very grateful to be connected to our generous collaborators through their stories, and to share the connection between their lives and the works in the Rubin’s collection with all of you.
