VOLUME 36 - NUMBER 3
Our focus in this issue is the San Antonio Museum of Art, and in particular its new Lenora and Walter F. Brown Asian Art Wing which opens in May and which will provide a dozen new galleries and exhibition space to display the museum's collcetion of more than 1,400 Asian works of art. Martha Blackwelder first introduces the various collectors who have donated so generously to the museum's Asian galleries. Julia Curtis looks at some of the Browns' collection of porcelain in the Chinese ceramics gallery and explains the decorative schemes. On a different note, Thomas Lawton shows the interaction between east and west through his narration on the life of Nomura Yozo who eventually becomes 'kurio king' in Yokohama. Back in China, Shih-shan Susan Huang explores the efficious and 'magic' power of 'mobile deities' in Song dynasty Buddhist and Daoist religious paintings. Beijing's flourishing, if not always controlled, auction scene is surveyed by Bruce Doar, while Laura Whitman reports on the Cultural Property Advisory Committee hearings which took place on 17 February to determine whether or not China's request for a control of imports to the US will be accepted. The universally important question of authenticity in museum collections - genuine article or fake? - is examined by Donna Strahan following an exhibition on forensic testing of artefacts.
