VOLUME 7 - NUMBER 2
The Guimet’s Afghan Treasures
Quiet Corners of Kathmandu
Pruning the Flowers of Edo
The Frenzy Called Ati-Atihan
Cover. Knowledge of Afghan art has been immeasurably enriched by the pioneering efforts of French archaeologists, many of them from the prestigious Musée Guimet in Paris. As a reward for their efforts, these men returned to France with many excellent examples of the Afghan sculptors’ art, like the head of a barbarian, from the Tapa Kalan Monastery in Hadda, on our cover. The portrait is of a foreigner – probably a Sythian, to judge by his curly hair and drooping mustache – who donated all he had to the monastery to follow the ascetic path of the Buddha. Courtesy of the Musée Guimet.
