Cover. An overmodelled tortoise shell gable mask, Korogo, Sepik River area, Papua New Guinea. Richly painted in natural colors and edged with rattan, feathers and shells, this and similar masks were placed at the gable ends of “Haus Tambaran,” the spirit houses accessible only to adult males and initated boys, where tribal ceremonies are held and sacred carvings are kept.
