Many westerners were already being inspired to create their then revolutionary graphics by the Pacific. This is being forgotten in our time, whose students of the development of modern art tend to look for antecedents of the expressiveness of western art today in African primitive art. A more careful look at the subject reveals that the early Expressionists were directly influenced by the Pacifican heritage.
