To commemorate the handover of Hong Kong to mainland China, highlights of this issue evaluate the developments in Chinese archaeology over the last 25 years and reflect on the contributions made by a Chinese archaeologist and a French Sinologist to the understanding and appreciation of early Chinese art. In addition, an overview of Hong Kong art collections emphasizes the important role the city has played in the more recent past as a centre for trading and collectiong art.
