VOLUME 49 - NUMBER 2

The main focus of our March/April issue is an exhibition whose theme is unprecedented at a Hong Kong museum—‘The Blue Road: Mastercrafts from Persia’, on view at the Liang Yi Museum from 20 March to 24 June. Featuring nearly 100 works on loan from across the globe, the show highlights the importance of the colour blue in the visual and material culture of the Persian world and its impact on artistic traditions elsewhere. Noorashikin binte Zulkifli introduces two Islamic folios lent by the Asian Civilisations Museum, while James D. Frankel discusses Islamic calligraphy on Chinese Ming dynasty blue-and-white porcelain.

Another major exhibition on view this spring is ‘Crowns of the Vajra Masters: Ritual Art of Nepal’ at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. John Guy traces the history of these crowns worn by Vajracharya priests and their relation to Buddhist practice.

The next three articles are related to the painting tradition. Stephen Addiss presents the work of some little-studied nanga artists; Jennifer Purtle writes on the Yuan dynasty artist Guan Daosheng and the perception of her oeuvre and persona, kicking off our new series ‘Women in Asian Art’; and Julia F. Andrews and Kuiyi Shen look at the collaborative works of contemporary artists Arnold Chang and Michael Cherney, on view this spring at The University of Hong Kong.

Included also among our line-up of features is an exploration of Chinese display stands, by Pascal Grange.
