VOLUME 43 - NUMBER 7

This issue celebrates milestones. In 1987, an important new institution opened in Washington, DC: the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, authors reflect on highlights from the Sackler’s first quarter of a century. Director Julian Raby describes memorable achievements and looks forward to future developments. Massumeh Farhad, Keith Wilson, Louise Allison Cort and James Ulak discuss four significant collections that have contributed to the depth and breadth of the Sackler’s permanent holdings, while Alexander Nagel, Yang Junchang, Alfred Haft and Claire Roberts focus on selected works from, respectively, the collections of early Iranian ceramics, Eastern Zhou garment hooks, Edo and Meiji period prints, and works by Huang Binhong. The Sackler’s groundbreaking exhibitions are the focus of an article by Stephen Allee, Debra Diamond, Carol Huh and Ann Yonemura.

Also this month, Taiwan’s Ching Wan Society is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Hsiung Yi-Ching recounts a history of the society, and our interview with president Thomas Pan provides insights into their collecting philosophy. Adele Schlombs introduces a special exhibition of treasures from the Palace Museum, Beijing at the Museum of East Asian Art, Cologne. Jorrit Britschgi pays tribute to Helmut Brinker, and Olaf Czaja reviews a new two-volume publication on Mongolian Buddhist art. Finally, Atteqa Ali offers her perspective on art patronage in Pakistan.
