VOLUME 47 - NUMBER 6

Our first issue after our summer break celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (‘the Asian’). Leading this special issue, Director Jay Xu introduces some favourite works from the founding collection donated by Avery Brundage, including the iconic bronze rhinoceros. Other discussions explore the diversity of the museum’s extensive holdings, with curators in different fields focusing on a single object or area. These range from a Japanese political portrait and an early Himalayan thangka to an ivory dagger handle, a Goryeo celadon ewer and an inscribed jade cup, as well as to the surprising connections between a Qianlong porcelain and European textile designs, and reflections on half a century of contemporary art at the Asian.

In other features, Jan Stuart explores the surprising resonance between a Rothko painting and a Xuande period copper-red-glazed dish, on view at the Freer|Sackler this autumn, and Michelle Yun writes on Zao Wou-Ki’s early artistic influences, coinciding with the first-ever US retrospective of Zao’s work at Asia Society, New York, co-organized with Colby College Museum of Art.

Looking forward to 2017—our 48th year in publication—we have exciting plans in store. Significantly, we will be relaunching as a bi-monthly, signalling an increase in both the quantity and level of content in each issue and coverage of a wider geographical region. Look out for new categories as well in the year ahead!
